Leap Forum on Climate Change and the Peterborough Official Plan
March 21 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm EDT
The Leap Manifesto calls on us to take action on many fronts to combat climate change and related social justice issues. Municipalities are key in this fight and provide the most accessible venue for citizen engagement. The Greater Peterborough Climate Change Action Plan objectives must be supported by all aspects of municipal planning.
We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to come together as a community to plan and build an inspiring future for Peterborough. This will happen through the first full Official Plan Review in 36 years (“Planit Peterborough”), with public direction and your input being sought by city hall.
The Official Plan is the vision and central document that guides city growth, development, and land uses over time. It is a framework to assess proposed changes to achieve this vision, with detailed policies and maps. It can bring a community’s dreams for the future into reality — for housing, shopping, parks, jobs, urban agriculture, transportation, good design, etc. Required by the province, a city can only fund or build what is set out, or changed, in the Official Plan.
At the LEAP Forum on March 21, we will explore the question: “What would a LEAP-inspired Official Plan look like?” The workshop will help our community to:
- Study, evaluate choices, and plan for where and how people live, work and play
- Shape our city’s future and create a livable, vibrant city with our own distinct identity
- Give a public voice and direction at an early stage for private development projects
- Balance competing views between positive change and protecting what we value
- Ensure provincial oversight of city directions and policies
The attached hand-out and questions will help you or your organization think about your vision in preparation for the LEAP workshop! You can also find out more about the co-host of the workshop, Reimagine Peterborough, at its website.
The second hour of the Leap Forum will allow people to choose between continuing with the Plan workshop or joining any of the other regular workshops.
Join us on Tuesday, March 21, 7:00 to 9:00, Trinity United Church, 360 Reid Street. Invite your Facebook friends to the Facebook Event or forward this email to others who might be interested.
